Common Benign Conditions in Newborn Babies

Peeling of Skin

Common in some full-term and post-term babies. Application of coconut oil is usually sufficient.

Mongolian Spots

Bluish patches usually seen over the sacral area, buttocks and trunk. They disappear gradually on their own.

Erythema Toxicum

Reddish rash appearing on the 2nd or 3rd day of life. It spreads over the body and disappears naturally within 2-3 days.

Milia

Small yellowish-white spots seen on the baby’s face. They resolve spontaneously without treatment.

Stork Bites / Salmon Patches

Pinkish patches usually seen on forehead, eyelids, root of the nose or back of neck. They gradually fade away.

Subconjunctival Hemorrhage

Small red patch in the eye due to birth pressure. It disappears naturally within a few days.

Tongue Tie

Baby cannot protrude tongue beyond lip margin. It may affect speech clarity but usually does not delay speech.

Epstein Pearls

Small white spots on the palate or gums. These are harmless and disappear on their own.

Cutis Marmorata

Lacy red or bluish pattern on skin when baby feels cold. It disappears once the baby becomes warm.

Natal Teeth

Teeth present at birth or erupt soon after. Removal is needed only if loose or causing injury.

Hymenal Tags

Small pink mucosal tags at the edge of hymen in female babies. These are normal variations.

Non-Retractable Prepuce

This is physiological phimosis where foreskin cannot be retracted. It is normal and no treatment is required.

Congenital Hydrocele

Fluid collection around the testicle that usually disappears within the first three months.

Prominent Xiphisternum

The lower part of the breastbone may appear prominent in newborns. This is harmless.

Umbilical Hernia

Occurs due to weakness of abdominal muscles. It usually resolves spontaneously by age 3 years.
